The Cyprus Department of Migration has officially announced the resumption of accepting applications for the Digital Nomad Visa program. Behind this concise news is a large–scale government project aimed at strengthening Cyprus’ position as an international hub for highly paid professionals who can work from anywhere in the world. It is assumed that (as in previous years) the number of applications will be strictly limited. It is estimated that approximately 500 families will be able to obtain the status within a year.

What does Cyprus offer to digital nomads?

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa program is a brilliant marketing ploy. Indeed, according to a study by MBO Partners, the number of digital nomads in the world has exceeded 35 million by 2025, an increase of almost three times compared to the pre-pandemic period. At the same time, according to the Nomad List platform, the average income of a remote specialist is about $85,000 per year. This makes nomads an incredibly attractive asset for any country’s economy.

From the point of view of potential applicants, the Cyprus program looks very attractive. Especially if you compare it with similar offers from other countries. Applicants receive:

  • The right to stay on the island for a year with the possibility of extension for an additional 2 years;
  • The opportunity to bring family members with you – spouses and minor children. Although without the right to employ them in Cyprus;
  • For stays of more than 183 days – Cyprus tax resident status. Which, given the island’s favorable tax regime, can be a significant financial bonus for highly paid professionals.
Opinion
“The resumption of the Digital Nomad Visa program is an absolutely logical step on the part of the Cypriot authorities,” says Alexey Karpov, an expert on international tax planning. “After its successful launch in 2022, the program has proven its effectiveness in attracting wealthy professionals to the island who not only spend money, but also form an innovative ecosystem around themselves that is attractive to investors and startups.”

Meanwhile, the requirements for applicants remain quite high. The main ones are:

  1. Citizenship of countries outside the European Union or the European Economic Area;
  2. The ability to work remotely using modern telecommunication technologies;
  3. Employment in a company registered abroad, or self-employment with the provision of services to foreign clients;
  4. Having a stable and sufficient monthly net income of at least 3,500€ (after deducting all taxes and contributions).

Why is Cyprus interested in “digital guests”?

According to economists, one digital nomad spends an average of 1,500 to 2,500euros per month on the territory of the host country (including rent, food, entertainment and various services). With a quota of 500 families– this is a potential inflow into the economy of at least 9-15 million euros annually. And this is without taking into account possible investments in local businesses.

Opinion
“The experience of other countries (from Portugal to Thailand) clearly demonstrates that digital nomads are becoming catalysts for the development of entire districts and cities, stimulating the emergence of coworking spaces, trendy cafes, and specialized services,” emphasizes Maria Konstantinova, an analyst at the international real estate market. In Portugal, for example, thanks to the influx of remote workers and a special visa program, the once depressed areas of Lisbon have turned into trendy neighborhoods with rising real estate prices. We are witnessing something similar today in Paphos, Cyprus.”

Experts also note that against the background of the post-crisis recovery of the tourism industry, the program makes it possible to diversify the island’s economy. This attracts a more stable and predictable source of income than seasonal tourism. Digital nomads, unlike tourists, often stay on the island all year round. Thereby supporting local businesses even in low season.

Cyprus has a unique combination of attractiveness factors for remote workers: European level of infrastructure, English-speaking population, mild climate, relatively affordable prices compared to Western Europe. Many choose Cyprus as the first station on the path of digital nomadism. Now (with the possibility of obtaining a three-year residence permit) the island can become a base for long-term residence.

Program prospects

According to the global Work From Anywhere index (which evaluates countries by their attractiveness to remote workers) Cyprus rose by 7 positions in 2024, ranking 14th in the world. He was ahead of many European countries. Experts predict that if the current conditions of the program are maintained and the infrastructure is further developed, the island may enter the top 10 most attractive destinations by the end of 2025.

Info
If the limit of 500 people is filled annually, by 2028 the total contribution of digital nomads to the economy of Cyprus will reach 60-90 million euros.

For those who are interested in moving to Cyprus under the Digital Nomad Visa program, now is the right time to apply. The quotas have not been exhausted yet and the terms of the program are attractive. Given the growing interest in digital nomadism and limited quotas, those who apply in the next few months will have a better chance of getting approved.
