A new long–term residency program, the Blue Visa, has been launched in the United Arab Emirates. This step was a logical continuation of the state’s course towards sustainable development. 2024 was declared the second Year of Sustainability in a row, and applications for a new visa were officially opened in 2025. We have already written about Golden Visa program update. The Blue Visa is designed for specialists who have made a significant contribution to environmental protection, the development of sustainable development technologies, as well as to the conservation of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Who can apply for a Blue Visa
The right to a 10–year residence permit is granted:
- Ecologists, climatologists, marine biologists and other experts in the field of environmental protection;
- Activists working both in the UAE and abroad;
- Members of international organizations, companies and NGOs dealing with the environment;
- Laureates of international prizes in the field of ecology;
- Researchers and specialists implementing sustainable development practices;
- Investors and entrepreneurs implementing projects in the field of clean energy and sustainable technologies.
To apply, you will need to provide proof of achievements and contributions to the environmental field, a valid passport (at least 6 months before graduation), a fresh photo and pay the fees. The application process is completely electronic, it takes about 7 minutes, and the application process takes 1 business day. The cost of the nomination request is 350 dirhams.
Advantages of the “Blue Visa”
- 10–year residence permit with the possibility of extension;
- Access to public and private initiatives in the field of ecology;
- The opportunity to cooperate with leading organizations and investors;
- Participation in sustainable development programs and access to project financing.
Unlike the visa programs of the EU and the USA, where long-term visas for environmental specialists have not yet become widespread, the UAE relies on attracting leaders of sustainable development. In 2023, the UAE ranked 1st in the region in terms of investments in clean energy (more than $40 billion was invested in renewable energy projects and climate startups).
You can apply through the official service of the Federal Office for Identification, Citizenship, Customs Control and Port Security (smart services platform) or a mobile application. Candidates can be nominated by the competent authorities or apply independently. Required documents: passport, photo, confirmation of achievements, payment of the fee.
