The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand has completed a large-scale reform of the visa system. From August 31, 2025, the number of categories of non-immigrant visas was reduced from 17 to 7. The measure, which was planned back in 2024, has finally come into force.
The stated goal is to eliminate duplication and improve the efficiency of processing applications. In essence, the authorities decided to bring order to the system, where there were previously too many overlapping categories.
What has changed in practice
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Department of Consular Affairs) has consolidated the old codes into 7 large categories:
- F (Official) – for officials;
- B (Business) – combined categories B, B-A, IM, IB, EX;
- ED (Education) – included ED, ED-A, R, R-A, RS;
- M (Mass Media) – for the media;
- O (Others) – merged O, O-A, O-X;
- L-A (Labour) – work visas;
- O L-A – special labor category.
According to the wording of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the reform is aimed at simplifying the framework, eliminating overlaps and increasing the efficiency of visa processing. Effective date: 31.08.2025.
The visa boom continues
The reform is taking place against the backdrop of active liberalization of Thailand’s entry policy. In 2024, the visa-free period for citizens of 93 countries was increased from 30 to 60 days. Plus, a new DTV visa was launched for digital nomads, which gives the right to stay in the country for up to 180 days at a time for 5 years.
Statistics show the result: in the first months of 2025 alone, Thailand recorded a significant increase in interest in long-term visa programs. The LTR visa (Long-Term Resident) has become more accessible – work experience requirements have been removed and financial barriers have been reduced.
The government is clearly betting on attracting wealthy foreigners and highly qualified specialists. In the context of global competition for talent and investment, every simplified procedure is a competitive advantage.
