The Extremadura region in southwestern Spain is planning to allocate €2 million to attract digital nomads.
How the region plans to attract immigrants
The regional government plans to attract digital nomads with money. There will be several payments, depending on how long the relocators have been living in the region. In total, the region has allocated €2 million to attract people.
Payment system:
- Immediately: Foreigners under 30 will receive €10,000 after selection as an incentive and support, this applies to both men and women. And men over 30 will receive €8,000. Unfortunately, the program does not apply to women over 30.
- After two years: women and men under 30 will receive €5,000 if they extend their stay in the region for another year.
- In another 2 years: if after these 4 years men over 30 want to stay here for another year, they will receive another 4,000 euros.
What is this region
Extremadura is an autonomous community on Spanish territory, right on the border with Portugal. It has a hot and dry Mediterranean summer, but at the same time a cold and wet winter. It has amazing heavenly nature and a high quality of life.
This is a truly ancient region, in which three cities are under the protection of UNESCO as cultural heritage. The longest Roman bridge, the remains of the Temple of Diana and other attractions of ancient architecture have been preserved here.
The Minister of Economy, Employment and Digital Transformation, Guillermo Santamaría, reported that the fibre coverage rate in the Extremadura region is 93%, which is higher than the Spanish average. The 4G mobile coverage rate is 97% and 5G coverage is between 75% and 80%. He made this point because good connectivity is important for digital nomads, and the region has it.
Extremadura currently has the lowest population density in Spain, with only 26 inhabitants per square kilometre.
Why the region needs digital nomads
The regional government is committed to strengthening the economy and is investing heavily in this. The current goal is to attract many highly qualified professionals to Extremadura and contribute to the growth of the Schengen area population.
Attracting these highly qualified professionals with income from abroad should stimulate the economy, business and infrastructure development. The new arrivals will consume goods, share experiences and create meaningful connections, including business ones.
Requirements for participation:
- Remote work
- Reside in Spain outside of Extremadura for at least 6 months before registering for the program
- Register and move to the region, to a city with a population of less than 5,000 people for at least two years
- If the candidate is not a Spanish citizen, he must obtain a legal identification number.
