The global remote labor market is being reshaped. And Canada is not staying away. The country has officially joined the race for IT talent by launching a program for digital nomads as part of the Tech Talent Strategy.

The paradox is that there is no separate “visa for digital nomads” as such. Remote workers enter on a regular guest visa or temporary residence (TRV). It’s just that now it can be done officially and legally.

How the Canadian scheme works

The design mechanism is simple. Specialists come for up to 6 months, work for a foreign employer, and spend money in the Canadian economy. And if they receive an offer from a local company, they can stay for another 5 years on a work visa.

“The digital nomads strategy will allow people with foreign employers to live in Canada for up to 6 months, spend money in our communities, and if they receive a job offer, we will allow them to stay and work in Canada,” said former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.

The main conditions of the program:

  • Work for a foreign employer who is not registered in Canada.
  • Proof of financial viability is the recommended threshold of 10,000 CAD for the entire stay.
  • Documentary evidence of the remote employment format and the availability of medical insurance.
  • Pure criminal history.
  • Confirmation of temporary stay.

Numbers and statistics

Canada ranks 8th in the global ranking of countries for digital nomads with a total score of 83.65. Not bad considering the harsh climate.

Interesting facts:

  • 32% of Canadian companies have finally switched to a hybrid operating model.
  • Remote employees show 13% more productivity.
  • The tax rate is 33%.
  • The cost of living is estimated as moderate.

The cost of the visa is 100 Canadian dollars. The processing time varies from 10 days to 2 months, depending on the country of origin.

The program works as part of a large strategy to attract tech talent. Canada competes for brains with other developed countries. So far, it’s working out well – the infrastructure is there, the Internet is fast, and medicine is free.
