The Indonesian authorities have radically changed their approach to extending visas for foreigners. Since June 1, 2025, the era of fully online renewals has ended. Now everyone will have to stomp to the immigration office in person. The reason is simple: there are too many violations.

The figures that forced the authorities to act

Statistics show an unpleasant picture. From January to April 2025, 2201 violations of immigration laws by foreigners were recorded. This is 36.7% more than in the same period of 2024. Yuldi Yusman, Acting Director General for Immigration, stated bluntly: the situation requires tough measures.

Joint inspections with the Investment Coordination Council revealed serious violations:

  • 546 foreigners abused their residence permits.
  • 215 companies lost their licenses due to fraudulent practices.

How the renewal system works now

The old scheme “submitted online — received an extension” no longer works. Now the process is two-step:

  • Online application via evisa.imigrasi.go.id with uploading documents.
  • Personal visit to the immigration office for photographing and interviewing.
Exceptions are provided only for the elderly, pregnant women, and the disabled. They can do everything in one office visit.

In Bali, immigration offices are located in three locations:

  • Nusa Dua (South Bali) — Jimbaran.
  • Renon (Denpasar, Southeast Bali).
  • Singaraja (North Bali).

The cost of extending the visa on arrival remains the same — 500,000 Indonesian rupees. Plus Bali’s tourist fee of 150,000 rupees.

Tourism boom continues despite restrictions

The paradox is that stricter regulations are taking place against the backdrop of record tourism growth. In the first quarter of 2025, 2.74 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia. This is 7.83% more than last year’s figure. Bali is showing even more impressive numbers. In January 2025 alone, the island received 611,603 people, which is 22% more than in January 2024. The Australians are in the lead with 139,577 arrivals, followed by the Chinese with 61,984, and the Indians with 36,514.

The new rules apply to all categories of visas, from tourist visas on arrival to long—term KITAS permits. The procedure will take no more than 5 minutes if all the documents are available and the dress code is followed.
