Student visas: What will change
The validity period of the visa will now coincide with the duration of the study:
Bachelor’s degree — a visa will be given immediately for 4 years.
Master’s degree — for 1 or 2 years.
Language courses are only for the duration of the courses themselves, with the option to extend them once.
Important for students of language courses: after graduation, they will no longer be able to change their status to a residence permit for entrepreneurs (for sole proprietors). But there will still be an opportunity to switch to a digital nomad residence permit or a startup residence permit.
The application will only be available from the country of residence or citizenship. However, family members of students will be able to apply for reunification directly in Spain after the main applicant receives a visa.
The law on startups recently adopted by the Spanish Congress under the Digital Spain 2026 Agenda is aimed at developing technology companies and attracting qualified specialists from third countries who want to work remotely. The fifth amendment to the law last December on the development of the business ecosystem of companies introduced significant changes. It eliminated bureaucratic barriers, opened up new opportunities for nomads, simplified the tax regime, and simplified the language exam rule.
