Taiwan has announced that the government is preparing to introduce new visas for digital nomads. This decision was made to attract more solvent specialists to the country and stimulate the economy.
By 2029, Taiwan is expected to have a shortage of 350 thousand employees, so there are plans to attract at least 200 thousand people, including 80 thousand technical workers and 120 thousand foreign specialists, including at least 10 thousand digital nomads.
What are the conditions for obtaining a visa
According to the National Taiwan Development Council (NDC), freelancers and hired employees working remotely will be able to obtain a visa. Other requirements have not yet been announced, but there are assumptions.
Thus, Taiwan primarily focuses on the Japanese non-renewable Global Elite Visa in its program, under which specialists with a salary of more than 6 million Taiwan dollars can obtain permanent residence after just one year of residence. Taiwan has not yet provided exact requirements for visa applicants, but it seems that they will be similar.
What opportunities does a digital nomad visa provide in Taiwan
Digital nomads with a special visa will be able to stay in the country for up to 6 months a year. First, they will receive a three-month visa, and then they can easily extend it for another three months if necessary.
After a year, they will be able to apply for other visas and eventually legalize themselves in the country and find work here. For example, digital nomads will be able to receive a Gold Card and Entrepreneur Visa
How will digital nomads be attracted
Taiwan is focusing on its neighbors – Japan, Thailand and South Korea. These countries have long introduced visas for remote workers and are attracting digital nomads from around the world.
Liu Ching-ching, Minister of the National Development Council, said that Taiwan intends to attract labor from remote workers, of whom there are more than 35 million people in the world today.
The government plans to launch advertising on online platforms in advanced countries, such as the UK.
